Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Context of Sentencing
